(Allium fistulosum) Ishikura Long Winter is a classic Japanese winter-hardy bunching onion with long white stalks and sturdy, upright dark green leaves. Of a handful of winter varieties we trialed recently, Ishikura was our favorite. Lovely diced as a garnish or left whole and roasted, it is a valuable allium for the kitchen garden. We directly sow them with a seeder and have harvested them every month of the year.

Growing Info

SOWING:

Sow indoors from late Feb-mid March.

Transplant out 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.

Direct sow anytime from early Spring until 6 weeks before your last Fall frost date.

Note: Can easily be direct sown. To start early, sow clumps in an open flat or 6-8 seeds per cell.

FERTILITY:

Heavy. Prefers well-drained, loamy, well-balanced fertile soil (heavy on the N.), with a pH between 6.0-6.8, and dislikes acid soil.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Onions would like you to keep them well-weeded as they are slow-growing and compete poorly.

Hill a few times during the growing season as this will blanch the stems, leading to a greater edible white area.

Ishikura will overwinter in well-drained soil.
